Foust for Dranesville

Dranesville district supervisor incumbent Stu Mendelsohn did not seek reelection, and Joan DuBois, a Republican and Mendelsohn's appointee to the Planning Commission, faces civic activist John Foust, a Democrat.

This was not a simple race to decide. Both are long-time residents with substantial understanding of the workings of government.

Foust's commitment to community, in particular his volunteer work for the Medical Care for Children Partnership and on the Transportation Coordinating Council, demonstrate understanding of a broad range of complex issues along with compassion. He identifies local challenges including the ongoing revitalization of the McLean business district, the encroachment of development from Tysons Corner, conflict over rail to Dulles especially for Herndon businesses and commuters, and development pressure on Great Falls and the Hunter Mill Road area. Countywide, schools and services for children top his list, along with traffic, open space and providing tax relief to homeowners.

DuBois's first-hand experience in a supervisor’s office and as planning commissioner is a plus, as are her moderate views — she does not support the 5 percent tax cap touted by the top of her ticket, for example.

But land use continues to be a major issue in Dranesville, and DuBois' assertion that the county has all the tools it needs to manage growth shows an acceptance of the current pace and quality of development.
