Inconsistent Pledge?

Letter to the Editor

<bt>To the Editor:

Where does Robert McDowell (R) stand on taxes? First, he says he has signed a pledge to “oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.” But then he says he wants to restructure the tax system to “increase consumption taxes, such as the hotel, meals, sales and tobacco taxes.”

Isn’t that inconsistent? Even if you offset an increase in the sales tax by cutting the income tax — that’s still a tax increase for somebody. That’s especially true if you’re an older person on a fixed income who doesn’t pay any income tax. Then you’ll get socked with a massive tax increase.

It sounds to me like McDowell’s pledge isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. I’ve had enough of politicians talking out of both sides of their mouths.
