Longtime Clifton Resident Julia Sutphin, 81, Dies

Julia Irene Embrey Sutphin died on Sunday, Sept. 14, at the age of 81. She was born March 11, 1922, in Fauquier County, VA. She is predeceased by her parents, Benjamin S. and Lucy L. Embrey; her husband, Harry L. Sutphin, and a brother, Courtney Whitely. She is survived by several cousins.

On Jan. 27, 1941, Julia married Harry L. Sutphin. They lived in Fauquier County, Loudoun County and Washington, D.C., before settling in the Clifton area in 1943. They lived in the Clifton Hotel (now The Hermitage Inn) for 9 1/2 years then moved to a bungalow on School Street in Clifton; Julia remained there until 2000. After her husband's death in 1959 she did babysitting and housework for families in and around Clifton.

Julia was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Clifton Fire Department for many years and supported them even in her retirement years. In turn, they kept an eye on her and helped her with yard work and other chores. She was a faithful member of Clifton Baptist Church from 1953 until her death. She was also a member of the 50-90 Club.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Baker's Funeral Home in Manassas, followed by interment at Union Cemetery, Leesburg. Rev. M. Peyton Embrey, Pastor of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Midland, VA, officiated.
