Meditation. Learn how to improve physical health and state of mind through easy to learn Buddhist meditation techniques. Gentle Yoga. A fitness program, sponsored by the Reston Community Center Senior Academy, is geared toward people who are challenged by age, illness or inactivity. It will be held at the Reston-Herndon Senior Center on Fridays from 9:15-10:30 a.m. from Oct. 3-Nov. 21. Cost is $15 for persons over 55 who live or work in Reston, and $30 for all others. Participants must also complete a membership information form for the Reston-Herndon Senior Center. Memberships at the Reston-Herndon Senior Center are free. Self-Defense. Classes meet every Sunday at the Reston YMCA, from 4-5:30 p.m. Other classes meet 1-2 hours twice a week: Wednesday, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.; Saturdays, from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The program is recognized by the Police Martial Arts Association and the American Jujitsu Association. Floral Design: Vase Arrangements. Learn how to select and care for mixed flowers. Practice techniques for arranging several varieties of flowers in a vase. The one-session workshop is offered on Monday evenings, beginning Oct. 20, from 7-9:30 p.m., at Herndon High School, 700 Bennet St., Herndon. Course fee of $59 covers all materials and tuition. Hair Dressing for Teens. The Reston Community Center (RCC) will present a teen barbering workshop from 7-9 p.m. on Monday and Thursday nights through Oct. 20 at RCC's Hunters Woods facility, 2310 Colts Neck Road, Reston. The focus will be on developing the career skills necessary for cutting and styling, developing a creative flair and communication skills. Professional work ethic and hygiene, sanitation, tools and information on careers and licensing will be included. The class will be taught by an experienced and licensed barber. Pastel Drawing. Reston resident Carol Berman will help students to learn the medium and improve drawing skills on Thursday mornings, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at her Reston studio. Cost is $15 per session. Call 703-437-9068.

Art Classes. Artist Lassie Corbett is offering classes for children and adults at Herndon Old Town Gallery-A Place to Paint, 720 Lynn St., Herndon, beginning the week of Oct. 1. Beginning and Advanced Watercolor classes are offered, day and evening. Oriental brush painting on Thursday afternoons in a combined class for beginners and advanced students. Gentle Adult Yoga Classes. Classes are held in Reston at Brown's Chapel. Beginners level. Class schedule is ongoing. Mondays, from 7-8:30 p.m.; Thursdays from 7:30-9 p.m. Simple breathing, stretching and deep relaxation techniques are taught. Cost is $60/monthly. Family yoga classes forming for the fall. Lamaze Childbirth Classes. Certified Lamaze instructor at the YMCA in Reston. A series of five classes are offered on Tuesday nights, from 7-9 p.m. Call 703-631-4629 for a schedule and to register.

ESL Courses. Reston Community Center offers English as A Second Language (ESL) courses for adults with beginning to intermediate levels of proficiency in English. The courses will cover basic grammar, conversation, pronunciation and writing. Classes are targeted to people age 16 and older. Students are required to take a free Assessment Test before they can attend a class. The fee is $20 for people who live or work in Reston and $87 for all others.
