RCC's Senior Academy will present "Losses in Later Years" on Monday, April 19 from 1-3 p.m. People age 55 and older are invited to learn coping skills to deal with the losses that occur in late adulthood. Call the Reston Community Center, Lake Anne at 703-689-3550.

"Basic Automotive Knowledge," is an in-depth look at car care. Six sessions cover basic functions of automotive systems and automotive diagnostics. "Basic Automotive Knowledge" is intended for high school students only, and will be held on Saturday, April 24 from 9 a.m.-12 noon at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods. Art classes are being offered at Artworks Gallery, 11411-G Sunset Hills Road, Reston in April and early May. For more information, call 703-464-7477. All classes are limited to ten students:

* Basic Class: Painting Out of Your Mind from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on April 24 and 25. For beginners and experienced painters; an intuitive approach to the creative process with acrylics and mixed media resulting in abstract paintings and collages. $150.

* Wild Flower Painting from 12-3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 30. For beginners and experienced painters; a fun and experimental

interpretation of flowers with acrylic and mixed media paintings.

* 3 Day Master Drawing Workshop from 12-3:30 p.m. on May 4, 6 and 7. For experienced artists; work from a live model with charcoal and paper. $150. Instructor: Mimi Herbert.

Spaces are available in the Herndon Community Center's spring Lifeguard Training class. This course trains and certifies American Red Cross lifeguards. This is the most comprehensive course to date, and includes rescue techniques, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED. To be eligible for the class, participants must be 15 years old by the last day of the class. Participants must also pass a pre-course swim test. The class begins Saturday, May 1 from 9 a.m.-12 noon for student swim skills testing. The rest of the course is scheduled Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., May 8-June 19. There is no class May 29 in observance of Memorial Day weekend. The Herndon Community Center is located at 814 Ferndale Avenue, Herndon. Local Scout troops can complete some or all of the badge requirements for a variety of badges by participating in the scouting programs offered at Frying Pan Park. All programs are limited to 20 participants per session. Available sessions include:

Self-Defense. Classes meet every Sunday at the Reston YMCA, from 4-5:30 p.m. Other classes meet 1-2 hours twice a week: Wednesday, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.; Saturdays, from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The program is recognized by the Police Martial Arts Association and the American Jujitsu Association. Candlelight Yoga Classes. Ongoing classes are held at tranquil Brown's Chapel in Reston. Students learn gentle stretches, calming breathing practices and deep relaxation. Buddhist Meditation Classes. Participants will find "inner peace through gaining a practical understanding of the mind." Wee Play. A weekly activity class for ages 2-3 and their parents. Sing songs, make crafts, play with balls, hoops, and paddles, shake the parachute and enjoy a snack. ESL Courses. Reston Community Center offers English as A Second Language (ESL) courses for adults with beginning to intermediate levels of proficiency in English. The courses will cover basic grammar, conversation, pronunciation and writing. Classes are targeted to people age 16 and older. Students are required to take a free assessment test before they can attend a class. The fee is $20 for people who live or work in Reston and $87 for all others.
