Story Time for Preschoolers and Parents. Each Wednesday morning in August, at 10:30 a.m., preschoolers are invited to come with their parents to a story time at Centreville United Methodist Church. Stories are told by preschool and elementary teachers, based on Christian principles will involve children’s imaginations as well as their bodies. No registration is necessary. Come and enjoy! Meals on Wheels urgently needs volunteer drivers to deliver meals in the Chantilly area. It takes two hours on average to complete a delivery route, and drivers can volunteer to deliver meals bi-weekly or monthly. The Center for the Arts‚ Pied Piper Theater Summer Camps are currently taking registrations for Manassas and Woodbridge locations. Don't miss out on this exciting summer offering of acting camps and workshops throughout August for ages 5-18. Theater Express!, a musical theater day camp for ages 8-12 offers acting, improvisation, dance music, voice, theater combat, and a musical production to be performed on the final day of camp. Footlights and Fairy Tales is available for ages 5-7 and features theater games and a mini-musical performance.

For teens 13-18, Will Shakespeare's Excellent Adventure will be featured July 26-Aug. 13 with special guest teacher, Ken Elston from George Mason University. A Whodunit? Mystery Theater Workshop is offered in August in Woodbridge. Both programs run three weeks.

New programs include Comedy Acting and Improvisation, Storytelling on Stage, Stage Management 101, Acting Up with Shakespeare, and Onstage at the Kellar Theater.

The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking volunteers to join an active stream monitoring program. Choose a stream in your own neighborhood or you can be directed to a stream. Training and equipment are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Volunteers are trained to assess ecological conditions in streams based on chemistry, habitat, and benthic macroinvertebrates (stream insects). The Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM) is looking for adults interested in mentoring a child affected or infected by HIV/AIDS through the agency's PALS Mentoring Program. Volunteers make a one-year commitment to a child and visit with their "Pal" twice a month. PALS mentors are needed throughout Northern Virginia for minority children ranging in age from 6 to 15 years old. Training and ongoing support is provided by NOVAM and an agency funded background check is required. The Center for the Arts is now taking registrations for the Summer Session of classes in the arts. It offers many exciting opportunities for adults and children this summer. For adults, it’s the perfect time to try something new, such as drawing, oil painting, watercolor and basket weaving.

The World's Biggest Model Train Layout will be on display Aug. 7-8 at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. The show hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The train layout is being hosted by Northern Virginia N-TRAK, a local model train group that is the largest N-Scale Model Railroad organization in the world. In 1996, the group held the record for the largest Model Railroad layout of all time, soon to be overtaken by the Dulles Expo Layout, which will set a new record with more than 450 modular pieces making up a layout of over 70 N-scale miles in length. The Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation will be held Aug. 13-15, kicking off at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. Troops from Companies F and I of the 8th Virginia Regiment of the Army of the Confederacy will create a living history encampment at Ball's Bluff Battlefield Regional Park in Leesburg, on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 21-22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Drills from the Civil War era, firing demonstrations, bugle calls, camp life and the regiment's history will bring the 1860s to life. Visitors may ask questions of the volunteer re-enactors who will show the clothing, sleeping quarters, food, cooking gear and activities of camp life at this free event.

The League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area (LWVFA) has devised a method to answer questions such as: Confused about who makes decisions for Fairfax County? Don’t understand the tax system and who really has taxing power in Virginia? Don’t know why schools and roads are overcrowded or why elections occur every year?

The LWVFA presents “More Power to You,” an overview of how local government works and relates to Virginia state government. Four sessions are scheduled on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. in the Fairfax County Government Center.
