<sh>Haunted House Volunteers Sought

<bt>The Dunn Loring Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department is gearing up for its annual Haunted House, currently scheduled for Oct. 22-25. An informational meeting is set for Sunday, Aug. 15. <sh>Register at NVCC

<bt>Northern Virginia Community College sponsors fall registration sessions on Aug. 14 and 21, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Students can talk to a counselor, apply to the college, take placement tests and register for classes. The fall semester begins Aug. 23. For more information, call 703-323-3000.

<sh>Feds Award $2M to County Program

<bt>According to a release from U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded two grants totaling $2,248,485 to Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for its work with children and parents involved with the Head Start program. These grants will allow Fairfax County to continue its child-focused development programs, designed to serve children of low-income families. Head Start focuses on incorporating parents, community and students as partners in education.

<sh>Voce Seeks Singers

<bt>Voce, a choral ensemble, is conducting auditions for limited openings in all voice parts for its 2004-05 concert series. Under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Nafziger, Voce presents its 16th subscription season. Auditions are offered by appointment in August and September. To make an appointment, call 703-277-7772.

<sh>Correction

<bt>In the People story, "Video Voting Documentary Wins Prize" (Connection, July 28-Aug. 3), Leila Giles and Elizabeth Angel were 12 and 11, respectively, when they won second-place honors in the C-SPAN contest, not 13. Elizabeth is home-schooled by her mother, Amy Angel, and Leila is taught by her mother, Celeste Land. Also, Pamela Haines of TV & Me Inc. was the girls' mentor for this project and will receive $250 to use toward video equipment.
