Bike Trail To Close

Beginning on or about Aug. 23, the Mount Vernon bike trail through the Hunting Point apartments complex will be closed intermittently through October due to Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project construction. "This is required for the safety of the users, contractors and efficiency of construction," according to project officials.

"The detour will require trail users to share the path with pedestrians and bicyclists on the sidewalk," they said. Travel on the trail during off-work construction hours will not be affected.

"These closures will be short, ranging from one half day to several days, and intermittent throughout the specified time period," officials said. No trail closures will occur on weekends.

Routes during closures are as follows:

* North bound - Riders will continue along S. Washington Street into Alexandria not passing through the Hunting Towers area. Proceed to Green Street. Turn right onto Green Street to S. Royal Street. Right on S. Royal Street into Jones Point Drive and into Jones Point Park. Riders will be required to dismount at the S. Alfred Street/Porto Vecchio entrance and walk their bikes to the S. Washington Street/Church Street intersection.

* South bound - Bikers will travel on the east side of S. Royal Street to Green St. Left on Green Street to S. Washington Street. Left on S. Washington Street to Church Street. Dismount at Church Street. Walk bikes to the S. Alfred Street/Porto Vecchio entrance where the trail commences heading south along the George Washington Parkway.

Local access to Jones Point Park from S. Royal Street and Old Town will not be affected.
