<bt>On Sunday night, Dec. 12, the sixth night of Chanukah, more than 200 people gathered in Old Town Alexandria at J&J Oriental Rug Gallery to witness the lighting of the city’s largest menorah.
Rabbi Mordechai Newman, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria, spoke to the crowd, “We have witnessed our own Chanukah miracle,” referring to the rain which had stopped at 5:05 p.m., the time of the lighting.
Mayor Bill Euille was honored with lighting the Shamash, the “service” candle. “As proud Americans we are thankful that we live in a country which allows and protects each of its citizens with religious freedom and democracy,” he said.
Lt. Gen. Bob Magnus, one of the highest ranking Jews in the U.S. Marines, was honored with reciting the blessings and lighting the menorah. The general made special note of the men and women in uniform who are fighting in Iraq.
After the lighting, the crowd was treated to hot potato latkes to warm the body, and dancing to warm the spirit.
