Over the weekends, many Stone Bridge students can be found performing services for their community. Students participate in community service through opportunities offered by clubs such as National Honor Society (NHS) and Key Club. These clubs are fairly popular among students; there are approximately 230 members of NHS and 150 members of Key Club.
Both NHS and Key Club have strict requirements for obtaining and maintaining a membership. NHS requires a grade point average of at least 3.25, an application process, and four hours of service related activities each quarter. Key Club also requires an application process and completion of seven to eight hours of service every semester, depending on the time of year.
These clubs give Stone Bridge students opportunities to serve the community in activities such as Salvation Army bell ringing, senior socials at retirement homes, St. Jude's Walk, UNICEF fundraisers, baby-sitting afternoons, walks for cancer, tutoring, Special Olympics, and participation in the Big Brother Big Sister program.
Although community service is often used by high school students to bolster college applications, Rachel Merkle, president of Stone Bridge NHS, feels that, "service is something that comes from the heart, not something you do to be glorified."
