This March, Reston Community Center is offering two classes: "Basic Car Maintenance and Emergency Procedures" is a one-session class designed to teach basic vehicle maintenance as well as safety and emergency procedures. It is intended for ages 18 and older, and will be held on Saturday, Mar. 6, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods. The class fee is $25 for people who live or work in Reston and $35 for all others. This course will be repeated on May 15. "Basic Automotive Knowledge," is a six session class, covering basic functions of automotive systems and automotive diagnostics. It is intended for ages 18 and older, and will be held on Saturday, Mar. 20 and Apr. 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods. The class fee is $50 for people who live or work in Reston and $75 for all others.

The Reston Community Center is completely accessible to persons with disabilities and will provide reasonable accommodations in Learn to mix a perfect cocktail every time and add spirit to celebrations. Reston Community Center's (RCC) home bartending course will teach the secrets of mixology, or, in layman's terms, the art of bartending. A professional bartender will teach how to make a wide array of cocktails including martinis, margaritas, and mojitos. Learn how to create drinks that intoxicate the eye as well as the brain. The instructor will show you what glassware to use for each drink and how to add attractive garnishes to creations. The class will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 1-3 p.m. at RCC, Hunters Woods. Participants must be 21 years or older and must present a valid ID. Snacks will be provided. There is a $20 supply fee due to the instructor at the start of class. Class fee is $15 for people who live or work in Reston and $25 for all others. Register either in person or by faxing an RCC Registration form to (703) 476-8617.

A one-day overview of effective preventative home maintenance and small repair techniques will be held on Saturday, Mar. 6 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center. The workshop is designed to help homeowners avoid home component failures and the costly repairs that follow, including recommendations on how to develop short and long-term maintenance plans. The workshop will address problems associated with and preventative maintenance of appliances, HVAC (heating and cooling), kitchens, bathrooms, electrical, plumbing, doors and windows, walls and floors, siding, and roofing. There will be demonstrations of techniques and handouts will be provided. The Neighborhood Resource Center is located at 1086 Elden Street in the Dulles Park Shopping Center. "Home Alone," practical advice for latchkey kids, will be held on Thursday, Apr. 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods. The class is intended for children age 11 to 14. Class fee is $12 for children who live in Reston and $21 for all others. There will be a break and participants are welcome to bring a snack. Wee Play. Kites, shamrocks, bunnies, and flowers.   The spring session of Wee Play begins Feb. 18 and 19.  Wee Play is a weekly activity class for 2 and 3 year olds and their parents. Sing songs, make crafts, play with balls, hoops, and paddles, shake the parachute and enjoy a snack. Intuitive Painting classes, the pure expression of self and the process of creating, will be offered on Tuesdays, March 9 - April 27 (8 weeks) from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Judith Forst's studio in Reston. $230, all materials are included. Candlelight Yoga Classes. Seniors Art Class. The Reston-Herndon Senior Center, 1850 Cameron Glen Drive, Reston, offers art classes with Annette Tait for Fairfax County residents 55 years of age or older. Classes will include instruction in various mediums from watercolors and pencil to charcoal and India ink. Participants can choose the medium that they want to use. Classes are held at the center from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday beginning Feb. 6. Each six-week session is free; a minimal charge of $5 per person is required to covers the cost of supplies. Seniors Craft Class. "From Clutter to Keepsake: Craft a Memory Album With Creative Memories" on four Friday afternoons at 10 a.m.-noon, from Feb. 6-27. RCC's Senior Academy and the Reston-Herndon Senior Center will present a workshop with a Creative Memories consultant that will teach students how to preserve photos. All materials provided. Pastel Drawing. Reston resident Carol Berman will help students to learn the medium and improve drawing skills on Thursday mornings, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at her Reston studio. Cost is $15 per session. Call 703-437-9068.

Buddhist Meditation Classes. Participants will find "inner peace through gaining a practical understanding of the mind." ESL Courses. Reston Community Center offers English as A Second Language (ESL) courses for adults with beginning to intermediate levels of proficiency in English. The courses will cover basic grammar, conversation, pronunciation and writing. Classes are targeted to people age 16 and older. Students are required to take a free Assessment Test before they can attend a class. The fee is $20 for people who live or work in Reston and $87 for all others. Self-Defense. Classes meet every Sunday at the Reston YMCA, from 4-5:30 p.m. Other classes meet 1-2 hours twice a week: Wednesday, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.; Saturdays, from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The program is recognized by the Police Martial Arts Association and the American Jujitsu Association. Dance. The Reston Community Center is offering adults several introductory dance classes:

* Ballroom Dance, which takes place on eight Thursdays, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., from Jan. 15 to March 4, is a basic introduction to Rumba, fox trot, cha-cha, and waltz.

* Swing Dance I is an introduction to East Coast Swing. It will be held from 7:30-8:30 on eight Thursdays, from Jan. 15 to March 4.

* Salsa Dancing I teaches the rudiments of salsa: how to hold your partner, rhythm, style and steps. This class will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on eight Tuesdays, from Jan. 20 to March 9.

* Salsa Dancing II will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on eight Tuesdays, from Jan. 20 to March 9.

All of these dance classes will be held at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods. The cost of each class is $50 for people who live or work in Reston and $75 for all others.

Kiddie Open Gym. For ages walking through five years. Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave., Tuesdays and Thursdays, through March 4, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Open play, tumbling, big wheel days and kiddie basketball. Pilates and Yoga. Balanced Bodies has announced the new winter schedule featuring weekly programs beginning in January and running through March 27 with classes for beginners, advanced beginners and intermediates. Added to the pilates roster are classes aimed at cardio and strength with BOSU (Both Sides Up Apparatus).

In addition to a variety of classes for adults (16 years and over), Balanced Bodies offers classes for children up to age 15 on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. The program offers a workout and education on the healthy aspects of staying in shape plus the truths and myths of exercise and nutrition. The focus of all programs at Balanced Bodies is on building cardiovascular endurance and abdominal strength using fundamental exercises.
