Three-Vehicle Accident Halts Route 28 Traffic

A three-vehicle accident last week in Centreville sent all three drivers to the hospital and closed down a section of Route 28 for more than two hours. The incident occurred Thursday, Feb. 19, at Route 28 and Walney Road and involved a tractor-trailer, a trash truck and a car.

Charged with the traffic offense of failure to maintain control was Jorge Lopez-Lazo, 28, of 7319 Oak Crest Drive, in New Carrollton, Md. Fairfax County police say he was driving a tractor-trailer north on Route 28 in the center through lane, around 11:15 a.m., approaching the Walney/Braddock Road intersection, when his traffic light turned yellow.

Felix Espinoza, 38, of Manassas, driving a Chevrolet Corsica in front of him, stopped for the light. Then things turned dicey. "Lopez-Lazo rear-ended him, spinning the Chevy into the center of the intersection," said police spokeswoman Jacqi Smith. "Lopez-Lazo kept going, striking a trash truck stopped in the left through lane of southbound Route 28."

She said Lopez-Lazo's vehicle reportedly slammed into the middle of the trash truck's left side. Driving the trash truck was Terry Maurice Vincent Sr., 43, of Fairfax. All three drivers went to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Meanwhile, traffic on both sides of Route 28, in the vicinity of the accident, was backed up until around 1:30 p.m., until damaged vehicles were removed and police and rescue workers had cleared the scene.
