ESL (English as a Second Language) will be starting for the winter/spring semester at Centreville Baptist Church on Jan. 15, 2004. The class will be from 10-11:30 a.m. and there is a $5 registration fee plus cost of the book. Childcare is provided. There are two beginning conversational classes plus a Bible study class. <lst>The bluegrass band, The Seldom Scene, will perform a concert to benefit the children of the Child Rescue Centre in Bo, Sierra Leone. The opening band will be All 4Hym. The concert will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at Fairfax High School in Fairfax. Ticket prices are $40, $30 and $25 and can be purchased on-line at www.seldomscenebenefit.musictoday.com. They can also be purchased by telephone at 1-800-594-TIXX. All of the proceeds go to help these orphans.

Sierra Leone has been ravaged by a brutal civil war, many children orphaned and all of the children traumatized. The Child Rescue Centre rescued 40 children from the streets during the war and provided food, clothing, housing, education, health care and a loving and nurturing environment. In addition, 100 children have been placed with families and provided food, education and health care.

Life Line Screening, a provider of preventative health screenings, will be coming to Lord of Life Lutheran Church on Jan. 31 from 8:30 to 5 p.m. to perform ultrasound screenings to detect the risk for stroke and vascular disease, as well as bone density screening. Each non-invasive, painless test takes about 10 minutes and can help you detect problems early before they become serious. The cost is $45 and pre-registration is required. The Women's Ministries at Jubilee Christian Center will be having a Women's Bible Study, on the book, "Praying God's Word," Tuesday mornings, 9:45 a.m., from Jan. 20-April 27. The Centreville Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host a Family History Fair on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at 14150 Upperridge Road, Centreville. This event is free and open to the public. Keynote speaker Dale Van Atta, author and investigative reporter, will speak at 9:15 a.m. on interviewing relatives. Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on “Preserving Pictures and Heirlooms” and on the FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com Web sites. Registration for the classes will begin at 9 a.m. Several information booths will be staffed during the fair to answer questions about family history and genealogical research. Temple Beth Torah is a Reform Jewish congregation and member of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC) that meets at St. John's Episcopal Church in Centreville. Cedar Run Community Church is offering a series on "Simple Truths that Transform." Cedar Run is a non-denominational Christian church that is all about families, fun and faith. * Help for Hurts, Habits, and Hang-Ups — A Celebrate Recovery Group. This group uses the 12-step approach coupled with the teachings of Jesus to help overcome or cope with all types of addictions, compulsions, and life problems. * Dealing with Divorce — A Divorce Care Support Group. This is a video-based seminar group for people who are separated or divorced. The group is a place to receive sound information about ways to heal from the hurt and to cope with the life pressures which accompany separation and divorce. * Healthy Boundaries — Getting Control of Your Life. This group helps the over-stressed, over-worked, and over-committed to gain control of their lives through developing healthy, balanced relationships. The group meets at 7:30 p.m. each Thursday at 13777 Laurel Rock Drive; Clifton.

* Men's Issues — A support group for guys dealing with the unique issues men face in their jobs, personal lives, and relationships. The group meets at 7:30 p.m. each Monday at 4401 Shari Court in Catharpin.

The Purpose Driven Life. Centreville Community Church is examining one of the New York Times' best-selling books, "The Purpose Driven Life." Come discover the answer to the age-old question: "What on earth am I here for?"

More than 4,400 churches are participating in a spiritual journey this fall called "40 Days of Purpose" in order to answer this important question. Join in this journey on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Bull Run Elementary School, 15301 Lee Highway (at the intersection of Route 29 and Pleasant Valley Road in Centreville).
