Registration is open for "Summer Art Camp 2004" in Burke. Camp meets at the Woods Community, Burke Centre 1100 Wards Grove Circle and at Accotink Unitarian Church, 10125 Lakehaven Court, Burke. Art Camp is open to children 8 years old and older. Campers explore clay, sculpey, needlepoint, weaving, mat board designs, decorating T-shirts, drawing, watercolor and Chinese brush painting from 12:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Crafts & Drawing Fun Camp for 5-8 year olds: Campers explore crafts as decoupage, mixed media flower pot, yarn bottle, tie-dye shirts, paper maché tree as well as draw and watercolor paint. Monday through Friday, from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
Drawing Camp for 8 year olds and older: Campers extend their drawing abilities with varied media: pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, color pencil and explore different subjects as faces, still life, landscape, cartooning, from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Four sessions available: July 12-July 16; July 26-30 (no 5-8 year olds); and Aug. 2-6. The Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) is hosting College for Kids, with day camps for all ages and interests.
* Cyber Camp. Children will take apart a computer to see how it works, construct a working robot with Legos, create a Web page and design a computer game. Cyber Camp, for ages 10 through 17, features four modules: PC construction, Web page design, computer gaming, and Legos and robotics. Each camp is two weeks long. Sessions start Monday, July 12, Monday, July 26, and Monday, Aug. 9. Hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
* Academic Camp. Power Academy, for grades 1 through 8, focuses on developing English and math skills, but finds time for cultural history, art, basketball and soccer instruction as well. The four-week session is offered Monday, July 26 to Friday, Aug. 20. Students attend Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-noon. Academic Enrichment, for high school students, is a Standards of Learning prep camp concentrating on the core subject areas: English, science, foreign language and history. (The Virginia Department of Education requires that high school seniors must pass all parts of the SOL test in order to graduate.) Classes run through Friday, Aug. 6 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
* Sports Camps. Soccer. NVCC and partner The Corner Kick Company bring "Circle of Masters" coaches and electronic learning techniques to these soccer camps for ages 8 to 16. Children can attend for either a half-day (9 a.m.-noon) or full-day (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) session. The dates: from Monday, Aug. 9 to Friday, Aug. 13. Basketball. Five-Star Basketball presents a girl's (ages 10 to 18) camp Monday, July 12 to Friday, July 16 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For boys ages 10 to 15, the camp starts Monday, July 19 and runs through Friday, July 23. Five-Star uses high school coaches and works with campers individually to help them improve their game.

Lauren B. Lewis, a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School of Science & Technology was recently awarded a $2,500 scholarship through the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program. To qualify, students must maintain a minimum of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average, demonstrate accomplishments in special talents, leadership and community service, while successfully overcoming a challenge.
Myongsook Kim, a student at Fairfax High School, recently received first-place honors in the high school category in the 2004 Virginia School Boards Association Regional Art Contest. Student art from the elementary, middle and high school levels represented each school division in the state, which was judged at one of nine regional forums.
Stacia Engler and Julia Trieber of Oak View Elementary in Fairfax recently were awarded the Educational Leadership Awards from Arc of Northern Virginia. Arc and Riggs Bank presents awards to educators who best use the guiding principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to help students with special needs in the classroom.
