<bt>Citizens concerned about traffic on Augusta Drive, which runs alongside Dominion High School to Route 7, cleared another hurdle in their pursuit to improve traffic conditions.
The Board of Supervisors Transportation Committee has approved plans to extend a sidewalk, paint crosswalk striping and lines in front of stop signs, install pedestrian warning signs and set up crosswalks with warning lights. The plan now goes to the full board for a vote.
The project involves three phases at a cost of $184,650. Funding will be provided by the county's traffic signal contingency fund, incorporated in the cost of the Route 7 North Collector Road and possibly through a state grant. An application for a $48,000 grant is pending with the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Committee chairman Mick Staton (R-Sugarland) said residents and the Westerley Home Owners Association have expressed concerns over the difficulty of crossing the road, speeding and cut-through traffic. They are uneasy about traffic at the intersection of Seneca Ridge Drive, home to Seneca Ridge Middle School, and Augusta Drive
The improvements also would affect Antioch Place to Maple Leaf Place (the future North Collector Road), Vermont Maple/Mountain Laurel Terrace and Duckspring Way intersections, and the Maple Leaf Place and Sweet Birch Terrrace intersection.
