Registration is being accepted for the Loudoun County Public Schools stringed instrument program for the 2004-05 school year. The program is conducted after school for students in fourth grade through middle school. A string class is offered at the high-school level as a curricular offering this year. Interested students should talk to their guidance counselor. Three orchestra levels will be offered: beginner, for students in their second-year of study; intermediate, which will be selected by an audition process; and high school for students with at least four years of experience.

A total of 417 graduating members of The Loudoun County Public Schools' class of 2004 earned $6,078,206 in scholarships, with more than $2 million coming from college-award grants. Advanced-studies diplomas were awarded to 1,194 students, or 55.9 percent of the entire class. According to a survey, 60 percent of the graduated senior will attend a four-year college and 26 percent will attend a two-year college.

For the second year in a row, Northern Virginia Community College has been ranked by Community College Week as the top producer of business degrees among two-year degree-granting institutions. NVCC ranked in several other categories, including a jump from 11th to seventh in overall number of degrees conferred. NVCC also ranked as the fifth highest producer of communication

technologies and technicians degrees and 13th among all minorities earning degrees. Community College Week is the independent source of in-depth information for and about two-year college faculty, administrators and trustees.

Students will be able to register for the fall 2004 session at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) beginning July 15 using the NovaConnect Web/telephone registration system. Classes begin Aug. 23 for the 16-week and first eight-week sessions. The second eight-week session begins Oct. 20. To access NovaConnect, go to www.nvcc.edu, and follow instructions.
