Elected Mayor, Council Oversee Town

The Town of Vienna is governed by a Town Council of six members and the mayor. Residents are invited to attend meetings but may not speak at work sessions. Council members earn $5,000 per year; the mayor earns $6,000 annually. The positions are nonpartisan. Three Council seats are up for election the first Tuesday in May each year; mayoral elections are held on even-numbered years.

<cl>Jane Seeman

<bt>* Mayor M. Jane Seeman was appointed to Council in 1996 to fill the unexpired term of the late Rodger W. Seeman. She was elected to a two-year term in 1997 and re-elected in 1999. In 2000 she was elected mayor and was re-elected in 2002 and 2004. She is active in many community service organizations and was named 1999 Citizen of the Year by the Vienna Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Vienna Times newspaper. She was director of the preschool program at the Vienna Community Center for 20 years until her retirement in 1998.

<cl>Maud F. Robinson

<bt>*Council member Maud F. Robinson was appointed to Council in 2000 to fill the expired term of M. Jane Seeman and was re-elected to additional two-year terms in 2001 and 2003. She previously served on the Board of Architectural Review and the Town/Business Liaison Committee. She is a board member of Historic Vienna Inc. and has been active in many of the town's service clubs. She was named 2000 Citizen of the Year by the Vienna Times newspaper and 1993 Citizen of the Year by the Vienna Regional Chamber of Commerce.

<cl>Laurie Genevro Cole

<bt>* Council member Laurie Genevro Cole was elected for the first time in 2002 and re-elected in May 2004. Before being elected to Council, she was a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals. She was appointed to that board in December 2000. She was previously a member of the Beautification Commission (from 1994-96, now the Community Enhancement Commission), the Sidewalk Study Committee (1998), and the Planning Commission 1996-2000. In 1996, she was the chairwoman of the Beautification Commission. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Pomona College in California in 1979 and a law degree from the UCLA School of Law in Los Angeles in 1985. She worked as an attorney for Steptoe and Johnson in Washington, D.C., from 1986-89 and has been an adjunct professor at Marymount University since 2000. She is also an inactive member of the District of Columbia and California bars. She volunteers with the PTA for her children's schools, is a team parent for several Vienna youth sports teams, and served as the secretary for the Vienna Madison Community Coalition from 1999-2001.

<cl>Edythe Frankel Kelleher

<bt>* Council member Edythe Frankel Kelleher was reelected in 2004 for her second two-year term on the Council. Currently on leave from a staff position with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors (1996-2002), she received a bachelor's degree from John Hopkins University and a master of business administration degree from George Washington University. She is the chairman of the Hunter Mill Land Use Advisory Committee and served as the Vienna Elementary PTA president 2000-01, the South Vienna Association President 1996-2000, a member of the Hunter Mill District Council of Civic Associations, and a member of the Vienna Regional Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Beautification Commission from 1997-99.

<cl>George E. Lovelace

<bt>*Council member George E. Lovelace was elected to the Council in 2003. Lovelace is a former town Councilman, serving from 1982-96, and former Virginia state delegate, serving from 1996-98, representing the 35th District. Before serving on the Town Council, he co-founded the Malcom Windover Heights Civic Association. He currently serves on the small business commission for Fairfax County and represents the commission for the Wilson Bridge Project. A retired Army officer, Lovelace is a consultant for the telecommunications industry and volunteers for CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates).

<cl>Michael J. Polychrones

<bt>*Michael J. Polychrones was elected to his current term on the Council in May 2004. He previously served on the Council from 1996-03 and served as vice mayor and acting mayor from 1999-2000. A 43-year resident of Vienna and an alumnus of Oakton High School, he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is married to Patricia Polychrones.

<cl>Sydney H. Verinder

<bt>*Council member Sydney H. Verinder was elected to the Council this year and also works as chairman of the town's Planning Commission. He has also worked in the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation. When not at work, Verinder serves as a neighborhood block watch captain for the Northwest Vienna Citizens Association. He also volunteers at the Church of the Holy Comforter and raises puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
