Repaving River Road

The State Highway Administration is going to be doing roadwork on a seven-mile stretch of River Road between Piney Meetinghouse Road and Seneca Road.

The project is estimated to cost $2.75 million and is expected to be complete by this fall, weather permitting.

Scheduled work includes grinding, patching and resurfacing of the existing roadway, along with the installation of new pavement markings and guardrails. The project also includes replacement of the existing curb and gutter systems and improving storm water management facilities.

Motorists should expect daytime single-lane closures along MD 190 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Nighttime closures are permitted between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday through Friday. Arrow panels, traffic barrels and variable message signs will guide motorists through the work zone.

Feldman Wins Award

Del. Brian Feldman (D-15) has been selected by the law firm of Semmes, Bowen & Semmes as the recipient of its Legislator of the Year Award for his work on legislation relating to workers compensation fraud. Feldman was presented with the award on May 25.

Residential Burglaries

* Hunting Ridge Court, 11800 block: Between 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. on June 1, suspects climbed through a window. It is unknown what was taken.

* Chisolm Landing Way, 14700 block: Between May 24 and 5:30 p.m. on May 28, suspects entered the home and took rugs.

Victims Wanted

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is looking for hundreds of volunteers to participate in an exercise to test the county’s smallpox vaccination clinic plan to be held on Monday, June 21.

In an effort to operate a simulated mass vaccination clinic, volunteers will serve as “clinic patients” and go through the entire process of the vaccination clinic plan, including being transported to the clinic, filling out forms, and waiting in lines for vaccination. No vaccinations will actually be given. Snacks and beverages will be provided, and first aid kits will be distributed to participants.

Volunteers must arrive at staging areas located in the Kensington/north Silver Spring area between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. and will return to the staging areas no later than 4 p.m. Volunteers will receive the exact locations of the staging areas from the Volunteer Center.

Redskins Alumni Bowl for Children

On Tuesday, June 15, participate in the Redskins Alumni Bowl for Children, a bowling fund-raiser where current and former Redskins bowl to benefit Children's National Medical Center, 6-9 p.m., at Strike Bethesda, 5353 Westbard Ave. The $100 donation for the event is fully tax deductible. Swiftwater Rescue Team Wins National Award

At the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR) conference on June 4, the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service - River Rescue and Tactical Services Team and the Baltimore County Swiftwater Task Force received the Higgins and Langley Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Swiftwater Rescue. They earned this award for their successful rescue of hundreds of individuals and dozens of pets in the Baltimore area during the storm surge and resultant flood waters associated with Hurricane Isabel.
