The Reston Triathlon needs volunteers to help set up the swim course, transition areas at Lake Audubon boat ramp and South Lakes High School, and help with packet pickup the weekend of September 11 and 12. On Sunday starting at 7 a.m., volunteers are needed for the two transition areas, post race food, run sentry, markings, bike marshal, and finish line. Volunteers will receive free t-shirts and food. Volunteers are needed for the Reston Festival at the Reston Town Center, Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11. Volunteers are needed for set-up, break-down, children's activities area, food and t-shirt sales, information booth and much more, and will receive snacks and a free 2004 Reston Festival t-shirt. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Big groups are welcome and students can receive validation for community service hours. Odyssey Healthcare, a hospice provider, is seeking volunteers in the Northern Virginia community to visit and/or assist terminally ill patients and their families for one to two hours per week. Training will be provided. Call Karen Baroody at 703-821-9200 or email kabaroody@odsyhealth.com.

Volunteers are needed weekday mornings from 10 a.m. until noon to guide individuals and families through four rooms of the Kidwell Farmhouse at Frying Pan Park in Herndon. Training is provided. Preferred commitment is at least two shifts per month. Kidwell Farm, located at Frying Pan Park and operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority, recreates the era from 1920 to 1950 when family dairy farms blanketed the local landscape. The Fairfax County Park Authority is accepting nominations for the 2004 Elly Doyle Park Service Awards. The annual award, established in 1988, recognizes outstanding volunteer service by groups and individuals in support of Fairfax County parks and park programs. Nominations will be accepted until July 2. Individuals and organizations can be nominated. Current members of the Board of Supervisors, Park Authority Board and paid park staff are ineligible. Anyone may offer a nomination. Award recipients will be honored at a reception and volunteer recognition celebration on Oct. 29. Volunteer opportunities currently exist for Information Desk Volunteers and Mobile Guides at Washington Dulles International Airport. A Travelers Aid Volunteer must have a "friendly, helpful manner and enjoy interacting with people from all over the world." Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to work one 3-4 hour shift per week. Early morning, mid-morning, afternoon and evening shifts are available seven days a week. There is a great need for volunteers who can work early morning, evening or weekend shifts. Experience in airline/airport operations, customer service work or knowledge of a foreign language are a plus but not necessary. Travelers Aid provides training, themed attire and courtesy parking. Volunteers are needed to serve on The Reston Multicultural Festival's Planning Committee. The Reston Multicultural Festival is a one-day extravaganza of music, dance, art, crafts and food to celebrate the cultural diversity of Reston. The festival, which is held every September, attracts thousands of people to Lake Anne Village Center. This year's festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Lake Anne Village Center. Planning Committee members plan and implement the entire festival. There are volunteer opportunities for every aspect of the festival including opening and closing ceremonies, entertainment, art displays, craft and food sales and demonstrations and publicity. Volunteers are needed for "Taste of the Town," sponsored by Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. The June 19 event, held at Reston Town Center, needs volunteers to take 2 1/2 hour shifts between noon and 10 p.m. Volunteers will receive free food tickets and a t-shirt. The Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is seeking volunteers for nursing homes or assisted living facilities in their communities and weekly visits. Listening, observing and mediating, the ombudsman works with the residents, their families and the facility staff to ensure that resident's rights are protected and they are being adequately helped. Applicants must successfully complete training and must be available to volunteer four hours per week during regular business hours. Inova VNA Home Health needs volunteers to visit homebound patients. Volunteers spend one to two hours a week talking to the patients, running errands and doing odd jobs. Visits are made during the day, evening or on weekends. Training is provided. Call 703-642-9041.

The Advisory Board of the Northwest Center for Mental Health in Fairfax County is looking for volunteers. The non-profit board meets monthly on first Wednesday evenings.
