Open Firehouse

Glebe fifth graders spent the year reading David Halberstam’s “Fire House” with firefighter mentors from Fire Station No. 1, next door to the school. The classes ended the year with a cookout at the fire house, including opportunities to try on fire gear, sit in the fire truck and attempt to control fire hoses.

The visits were part of the ‘Character Counts’ curriculum, said teacher Rich Haltunen. “The thing we tell them most is, ‘Stay in school!’” said Capt. Keith Young.
