Quarry Plans Annual Earth Day Fair

The annual earth day festivities at the Travilah Quarry will be on May 15.

This year’s event will feature bus rides into the quarry pit, clowns, face-painting, a petting zoo, pie eating contest, and children’s games. Hot dogs and other refreshments will be available.

There will also be a DJ and visitors will be able to register to win Orioles tickets.

This is the 13th year the quarry has sponsored the fund-raiser. “This has become a benefit,” said Debbie Levi, one of the organizers of the celebration.

Money raised at the event is donated to the Quince Orchard library and to North Potomac area Elementary schools DuFief, Travilah and Stone Mill.

Levi estimates that more than $45,000 has been raised in the part 12 years combined. “This is a successful community event,” she said.

Attendance at the event usually numbers in the thousands, and last year approximately 4,200 people came out, Levi said.

Admission and most activities are free, but there is a charge for t-shirts. Donations are encouraged.
