Two Accidents

The afternoon of April 28 was a busy one for the rescue squad from Cabin John station. Two “T-bone” accidents — when one car hits the side of another — took place in the Potomac area, said Cabin John spokesman Eugene Roesser. “It’s really the worst type of accident you can have, Roesser said.

The first occured at the intersection of Burdett and River roads at about 4 p.m. as a result of the accident, one person was transported to Suburban hospital as a Priority One trauma, Roesser said.

Later that afternoon, two other cars were involved in a similar accident at the intersection of Falls Road and Oaklyn Drive. “Fortunately there were no serious injuries, Roesser said.

Men Lost in River

Two men fell into the Potomac River on April 28, said Montgomery County Police. Amer Chaundry, 20 of Sterling, Va., fell into the river while climbing on the rocks on the Virginia side near Great Falls.

One of his friends, Fahad Huque, 24 of Rockville, jumped in to the water to help him. Both men disappeared into the water, say police.

Swift Water Rescue crews from Cabin John Station 10 and 30 were dispatched to the Potomac River on April 28, said Cabin John Spokesman Eugene Roesser.

Recent rains have raised the level of the water in the river. “The water is extremely high and fast,” Roesser said. “It is also extremely cold.”

Rescue crews from Fairfax County, Va., the U.S. Park Police and the U.S. Navy were also dispatched to the scene, Roesser said.

At about 12:15 p.m. on May 2, The Montgomery County Swift Water Rescue team, based at Cabin John Station, found the body of Huque on the Virginia shoreline, near Old Angler’s Inn, said Roesser.

“It is an indication that they most likely both drowned,” Roesser said.

The search for Chaundry is ongoing.

More Schools To Be Tested

Montgomery County Public schools have added 20 more schools to the list of those to be treated for lead. Every school which has been tested so far has had elevated levels in at least one location.

In Potomac, Cabin John Middle School has been found to have elevated lead levels up to 10 times the acceptable limit in some places. Water samples have been collected from Bells Mill Elementary, but results have not yet been made available.

In the newest round of testing, Beverly Farms Elementary is the only Potomac school on the list. It is scheduled for testing on May 11
