Route 28 Accident Injures Four

A Purcellville man remains in serious condition after a May 10 two- car accident in Sterling. Shortly after 1 p.m., Robert Degroot, 20, was attempting to make a left-hand turn from northbound Route 28 onto Republic Drive when he pulled in front of 1996 Buick heading southbound, according to the Sheriff's Office. The Buick, driven by Wendy Barker, 24, of Chantilly, hit the passenger side of Degroot's 1995 Saturn. Degroot suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident and was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Barker and her two children, a 4-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl, were also taken to Fairfax Hospital where they were treated and released. Fire and rescue personnel from Sterling, Arcola, Fairfax County, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Aircare were dispatched to the scene.
