City Police Veteran Becomes Chief in Kansas

After 24 years with the Alexandria Police Department, Cpt. Dennis Butler is leaving to become the police chief in Ottawa, Kan.

Butler was selected from a pool of 68 candidates. Butler, 43, began his career in Alexandria in 1979 as a police cadet. He has served in a variety of operational and administrative assignments within the department. He is currently the commander of the daylight patrol division where he supervises 50 commissioned officers.

“Although it will be difficult to duplicate the outstanding career of Ottawa’s retiring police chief, I am incredibly humbled by the confidence that the city manager and the people of Ottawa have shown by selecting me as the next chief of police,” Butler said. “Together, we will strive to maintain the quality of life that the citizens and business owners in Ottawa have come to expect and enjoy.”

Butler will assume his new responsibilities in late June.
