Memorial Day Weekend Events

The big show is on the National Mall. But Alexandria and Mount Vernon are also paying tribute to "The Greatest Generation" this Memorial Day weekend. Here's where to go and what to see.

Saturday, May 29:

<lst>*Simulcast broadcasts of the dedication of the World War II memorial at the George Washington Masonic Temple in Alexandria and at Mount Vernon Estate beginning at 2 p.m.

*Wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of George Washington, Mount Vernon Estate, 2 p.m.

*Swing Command - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Mount Vernon Estate

Sunday, May 30:

<lst>*Musical Salute to WW II veterans, Mount Vernon Estate, all day

Monday, May 31:

<lst>*27th Annual Jazz Festival, Fort Ward Park, 4301 Braddock Road, Alexandria, 1-8 p.m.

ALEXANDRIA WORLD WAR II festivities begin May 27 and run through the summer:

*Gadsby's Tavern Through the Legion Years

*World War II Exhibit at Old Town Theater

*Alexandria at War, 1941-1945, The Lyceum

Memorial Day Holiday Schedule for Fairfax County

On Monday, May 31, the county government is closed. Citizens recycling and disposal facilities at I-66 and I-95 will run on a regular schedule. Courts, County Community Centers, Senior Centers and Teen Centers will all be closed. County trash collection will operate on a regular schedule.

The Fairfax Connector will run on a Sunday schedule. There is no service for Fastran. Libraries will be closed and the Park Authority RECenters will close at 6 p.m. However, the George Washington RECenter, 8426 Old Mt. Vernon Road is closed all day.

Schools and school offices will also be closed on Monday.
