South Lakes High School's Marching Band earned an overall rating of "Excellent" at this weekend's State Marching Festival. Marching to the music of "West Side Story," the musical portion of the show received high marks from the VBODA adjudication panel. The event employs Olympic-style scoring with five judges from across the state of Virginia. The low and the high mark are dropped in the final tabulation. In their comments the judges commended the Seahawk band on their excellent staging, depth of repertoire and energetic performance. The final marching show of the season by the "Spirit of Reston" Seahawk Band will be performed at this Friday's home football game.

National headlining comedian Adam Ace, a 1993 graduate of South Lakes High School, will present his one-man show at the South Lakes High School Little Theater in Reston, Saturday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. The show, "A Carnival of Comedy," is appropriate for all ages, and includes all sorts of comedy including physical comedy, wacky props, improv, wild dancing and audience participation. All the proceeds of the show will go directly to the theater department. Tickets for the show are $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under, and can be ordered by calling 703-620-0567.

Lake Anne Elementary School in Reston is recruiting volunteers for its STAR Reading Program (Start Thinking and Read). Volunteers tutor a student with reading on a one-on-one basis over the course of the school year. The program takes place on Wednesday mornings and volunteers typically work with students for half an hour. You may select the grade levelÊor ageÊof the child you prefer to work with Ñ from kindergarten to grade five. Interested persons should contact Wanda Nelson, assistant principal, at 703-326-3500.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, 25 volunteers comprised of local community members, staff, parents and students gathered to continue the improvement of the building and groundsÊat Terraset Elementary School. Inside the building, several walls were repainted and outside the volunteers pruned, trimmed, mulched and cleaned up the around new landscaping.

The South Lakes High School Parents of the Choral Arts presents the third annual "Broadway Night: A Musical Review." South Lakes choral students will perform songs from the Broadway stage Thursday, Nov. 4, 7:30 p.m., in the school's Little Theater. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $5.

Fairfax County Community and Recreation Services, in partnership with the YMCA Fairfax County Reston is offering the Reston Teen Center After-School Program. The program encourages middle- and high-school youth to develop healthy behaviors, improve life skills, expose them to a variety of activities and provide them with an array of support from the staff and community. It includes: school support, prevention activities, life-skill training, community service, hobby enrichment, career exposure, and leisure activities.
