Aldersgate United Methodist Church invites the community to join in an in-depth study of the best-selling book, "The Purpose Driven Life," during "40 Days of Purpose" in October and November. Sunday sermons and weekly small group meetings will explore the age-old question, "What on earth am I here for?"

Live Concert. Saint James' Episcopal Church holds a concert on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. The church's Senior Choir will perform John Leavitt's Cantana Requiem. A reception follows the performance. * Sunday, Oct. 31, 10 a.m.: All Saints Day observation, including a guitar service. 5 p.m.: A traditional Evensong service. Guests, families are encouraged to come with costumes, if desired, for this "All Saints Eve," or Halloween.
* Wednesday, Nov. 17, 10 a.m.: The right Rev. Peter J. Lee, Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, will visit at the 10 a.m. service for a service of Baptism and confirmation, at which time candidates are able to make a mature commitment to the Christian faith and renew or reaffirm their Baptismal vows.
