Aldersgate United Methodist Church invites the community to join in an in-depth study of the best-selling book, "The Purpose Driven Life," during "40 Days of Purpose" in October and November. Sunday sermons and weekly small group meetings will explore the age-old question, "What on earth am I here for?"

Everyone is welcome for Aldersgate's "40 Days of Purpose" services on Sunday mornings at the church, Oct. 10-Nov. 21, at 8:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. Individuals can contact the church office now to join one of the many small study groups. Up Where We Belong Family Ministry will hold its Northern Virginia's Super Church event, the third Sunday of every month starting at 10:40 a.m., at Mount Vernon High School's main auditorium. Bring the family and participate in their worship celebration and eligible families will receive free groceries. Pre-registration is necessary. Contact Bishop Robert Lewis Taylor at 703-878-2247.

The Christian Business Women’s Committee (CBWC) meets to study God’s word each Wednesday morning at the Royal Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria. The CBWC meets Wednesday at 7 a.m. for breakfast. For information, contact Pamela Nilsen at 703-519-4475 or 703-660-6759.

Live Concert. Saint James' Episcopal Church holds a concert on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. The church's Senior Choir will perform John Leavitt's Cantana Requiem. A reception follows the performance. The church's building fund will be collecting nonperishable foods for the food pantry at United Community Ministries. Saint James' Episcopal Church is located at 5614 Old Mill Road, Mount Vernon. Noon Prayer Meeting. Christians from around the area unite in prayer for the country and community every Friday, noon to 1 p.m., at Regent University, in room 303. For more information, call Rich Nilsen at 703-922-5183.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church,  6744 S. Kings Highway, recently opened a new parish hall. Planned future events include:

* Saturday, Oct. 30, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.: Brother John Ogle of the Order of St. Francis will present "Healing in the Context of Worship", followed by a healing service and Eucharist.

* Sunday, Oct. 31, 10 a.m.: All Saints Day observation, including a guitar service. 5 p.m.: A traditional Evensong service. Guests, families are encouraged to come with costumes, if desired, for this "All Saints Eve," or Halloween.

* Wednesday, Nov. 17, 10 a.m.: The right Rev. Peter J. Lee, Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, will visit at the 10 a.m. service for a service of Baptism and confirmation, at which time candidates are able to make a mature commitment to the Christian faith and renew or reaffirm their Baptismal vows.

Pipe Organ Dedication and Recital. Guest Artist Dr. Haig Mardirosian, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at American University, and Organist and Choirmaster of The Church of the Ascension and St. Agnes in Washington, D.C., will perform works by: Hayden, Bach, Rheinberger, Demessieux, Lemmens, Hakim, Boellman. 4 p.m. Nov. 28 at Nativity Lutheran Church, 1300 Collingwood Road, Alexandria.
