Local high-school students learn about the world of high fashion.

Just like in the real world, not everything went smoothly, but 18 high-school students learned a lot about what is involved in a real fashion photo shoot.

On Sunday, Oct. 17, 18 young women, representing Bishop Ireton (B.I.) High School, St. Stephens and St. Agnes High School and T.C. Williams High School went to B.I. to participate in a fashion shoot. The event was sponsored by B.I.’s parent teacher organization and the school’s development office. Each participant paid a fee and learned from professional photographers, editors, writers, stylists, wardrobers and models about conducting a photo shoot. The shoot was managed by staff and students from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

The team began the day by discussing the varying career paths that led the professionals to their current careers. Then students spent the rest of the day participating in an actual fashion shoot – from selecting the clothes from a collection of New York and Washington designers, to dressing and accessorizing the models, to learning hair and makeup tricks, to choosing the photo shoot locations based on lighting and architectural interests from around the B.I. campus. Each student received a disc of photos from her day’s work.
