<sh>Jaycees Collect for Needy

<bt>Alexandria Jaycees and Cold Stone Creamery invite the public to participate in two holiday activities to benefit area needy.

The organization's canned and dry food collection is now underway until Dec. 6. Donations can be brought to Cold Stone Creamery, 239 Swamp Fox Road, Alexandria, in the Hoffman Town Center. They will be distributed to Christ House, a local provider of food and clothing for the needy.

On Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, the food drive will culminate with an ice cream fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery. Participants will also be eligible for hourly door prizes. A portion of proceeds raised between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. will be donated to the Jaycees on behalf of Christ House, according to Kristie Kehoe, Jaycees spokesperson.

<sh>Animals Party for League

<bt>"Alex," Alexandria's holiday Spokes-Scottie, has invited all his canine friends to celebrate the kick-off of the 2004 holiday season and benefit the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria with a party at Barkley Square, 1 Wales Alley in Old Town, Sunday, Nov. 21, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Under the joint sponsorship of the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association, Barkley Square and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, the event will feature a holiday dog "fashion" parade with prizes to be given at 2 p.m. Attendees will be able to meet adoptable dogs from the League's shelter, according to Laura Overstreet, vice president, ACVA Communications.

Dog owners will have the opportunity to have photos taken of their pets and have them made into souvenir photo buttons. Proceeds from the buttons, which will sell for $7, will benefit the League.

"Plaid," the Scottie protagonist of a series of children's books of the same name, will be on hand as will local children's author Leslie Young. She will autograph books for sale.
