<sh>South Lakes To Honor Hubbard

<bt>At a Veteran's Day Ceremony this Friday, South Lakes High School students will honor Tavon Hubbard, a South Lakes graduate killed in Iraq last August, and will hear a keynote address by Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Harvey C. Barnum, a Reston resident who is now deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for reservist affairs.

Barnum was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, for taking command of a rifle company in Vietnam after its commander and radio officer were killed. He rallied the company, which was cut off from the remainder of the battalion by enemy fire, and led a counter-attack against a gun position amidst heavy fire.

Hubbard, who grew up in Reston and graduated from South Lakes in 1997, served as a U.S. Marine in Iraq. He was killed last summer when his helicopter crashed outside Baghdad.

Other speakers at the South Lakes ceremony will include Kenneth Knight, vice commander of the American Legion, Department of Virginia, and Fairfax County Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill).

<sh>Bus To Teach Seniors 'Travel Safety'

<bt>A modified Fairfax Connector bus designed to teach senior citizens travel safety will be presented to the Reston community at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Lake Anne Fellowship House.

Fairfax County Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) and county Department of Transportation officials will show off the renovated bus, which uses hands-on education to teach seniors the nuances of public transportation.

Because some senior citizens can no longer drive and are often apprehensive about riding the bus, the "Mobile Accessible Travel Training" program will teach them how to read bus schedules, how to locate a bus stop near their residence, and how to use transfers.
