The West Springfield High School Booster Club is selling fresh Florida citrus fruit on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5, in the parking lot of Washington Irving Middle School on Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield. Oranges, grapefruits and tangelos can be purchased in full and cartons for $25 and $15, respectively, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 703-451-6671.

Lake Braddock Secondary School Symphonic Band is among 15 middle and high schools to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) conference in Norfolk on Nov. 18-20. Groups were selected by audition tapes.

Hayfield Secondary School student Kristen Garaffo, Hayfield Madrigal President, was selected as one of 12 Washington metropolitan area students by the Washington Post for its $1,500 Music and Dance scholarship.

Hayfield Secondary School students Kristen Garaffo, Christen Nguyen, Danny Yoerges and Daniel Paris were selected as members of the Virginia Educators’ Association Senior Honor’s Choir. Kristen had the highest audition score of any student in Virginia. Nick Peterson and Latham Gunn were selected as alternates.

Phyllis Gron, Hayfield Secondary School ESOL teacher, had one of her lessons, "Moccasins Are Made for Dancing," featured on the Artsedge which is the National Arts in Education Web site. A regular lesson writer for Artsedge, she also has published a 10-lesson unit on Frank Lloyd Wright titled "The Wright Way."

The school newspaper at Hayfield Secondary School, The Orange Peel, and the school's yearbook, The Harvester, were recently awarded the Virginia High School League’s top award, the “Trophy Class” rating for their 2004 works.

Hayfield Secondary School's Molly Dickerson, Angie Castillo and Karissa Castillo finished third at the first forensic competition of the year. Kristen Garaffo, James Messenger, Brian Gartland and Alex Bergersen qualified for the D.C. Metropolitan competition.
