Williamsburg Middle School is recruiting community members to serve on the school’s 50th Anniversary Advisory Committee. The committee will spend the next three months working to organize the school’s 50th Anniversary Celebration which will be held on Sat., Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school. Staff members are looking for alumni, past faculty and staff, and community members who are interested in serving on the committee. As the school year begins, Arlington parents and community members are reminded to sign up for APS School Talk, a subscriber e-mail service that is used to communicate up-to-the-minute news about the Arlington Public School, including emergency announcements. APS School Talk is a free e-mail update service for parents, students and community members interested in receiving timely information from the school system via e-mail. The service can be accessed from the APS home page, www.arlington.k12.va.us, and can be tailored to subscribers’ interests. By clicking on the School Talk logo on the APS home page, subscribers can register to receive the information they want, including announcements about inclement weather; emergency closings; press releases; adult education information and School Board updates. APS School Talk subscribers can register to receive the information they want their e-mail address at home, at work or both. For extreme emergencies, text messages can also be sent to a subscriber’s cell phone or pager.
The Herb Block Foundation, created in the will of Washington Post editorial cartoonist Herbert Block, is offering its first community college scholarships for the academic year beginning in the fall of 2005. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic performance. Scholarships will be given to C students who demonstrated academic improvement as well as A and B students. Eligible colleges are Montgomery Community College; Prince George's Community College; Northern Virginia Community College; and two-year programs at the University of the District of Columbia. The Arlington-based Leadership Institute’s Campus Leadership Program has embarked on a project to double the number of independent conservative student groups at colleges and universities this fall, kicking off this week and running through November. Representatives from more than 140 colleges and universities will be on hand Wednesday, Oct. 13, from 7-9 p.m., for the Arlington Public Schools "College Night 2004," at Ballston Common Mall. The event will include a workshop on college admissions at 7:15 p.m. followed by a workshop on financial aid 8:15 p.m. An information session on college options for students with disabilities also will be offered at 8:15 p.m. A list of the colleges, universities and trade schools expected to participate will be available on the Arlington Public Schools Web site at http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/SCR/events/college_fair_exhibitors.html.
