Walk To Benefit Homeless
<bt>A miniwalk to benefit as many as 1,000 homeless people in the Reston and Herndon areas will be held this Sunday. Starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Embry Rucker Community Shelter and ending at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, the walk is being sponsored by local congregations' youth groups from several faiths. Registration is $15 for youths and $25 for adults. All proceeds from the mini-walk will be put toward funding Reston Interfaith services to homeless people. The mini-walk is being held in advance of the 17th Annual Help the Homeless program, sponsored by Fannie Mae, which will include a large-scale benefit walk on the National Mall on Saturday, Nov. 20.
<sh>Connolly To Address RA
<bt>Board of Supervisors chairman Gerald Connolly will address the Reston Association Board of Directors at the RA board's next meeting on Oct. 28. Members of the RA board said they are looking forward to the chance to lobby Connolly for more influence on the county level because RA lacks any more clout than any other Fairfax County homeowners association. Connolly is not meeting with the board for any particular reason, RA board member said, he simply wants to check in with the board's relatively new leadership.
<sh>They Want Panda Back
<bt>The Hunters Woods Elementary School is attempting to buy back a panda sculpture in an online auction that the school's students painted last spring for a public art project in Washington, D.C. Periwinkle the Panda, part of the PandaMania project of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, was painted by hand-picked sixth-grade students at the Reston school. The auction for the panda, which is covered in multi-colored paint, will close this Friday. As of presstime, six bids had been placed, pushing the price up to $1,050. PTA President Cathy Uhrig said she hopes the school can get Periwinkle back for future students to enjoy. On the auction Web site, the PTA's bid says: "Hunters Woods Ñ We want it back!"
