Regulating Jaywalkers

The Herndon Police are requesting the public's assistance in ensuring the safety of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic by asking pedestrians to utilize crosswalks whenever possible and to always cross streets at intersections. Motorists can also assist by exercising caution during any vehicular operation. The Herndon Police will be focusing on laws regulating pedestrian safety in the 1200 block of Elden Street until April 20, in an effort to provide for a safer flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area.

Fire Hydrant Flushing

The Town of Herndon Public Works Water & Sewer Department will conduct fire hydrant flushing until June 30.

Fire Hydrant flushing is performed as a measure to reduce the amount of deposits that may accumulate in the water distribution system and to test for fire protection capacity.

Flushing will be performed weekdays during normal working hours — 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. — at various locations on the Town's water system. Hydrant flushing may affect water pressure and clarity for short periods of time in limited areas. If the water does become cloudy and tinted it is still safe to drink, but clothes washing should be avoided. This condition should clear up in one to two hours.

Water pressure may become low due to the flushing operation, but will return immediately after the process is completed. Call the Department of Public Works at 703-435-6860.

Elden Street Players Spring Season

The Elden Street Players are currently performing the comedy "The Mystery of Irma Vep," until April 16.

A Charles Ludlam play, "The Mystery of Irma Vep" is a parody of the old melodramas, which won the Obie and Drama Desk awards in 1984.

The comedy features two actors performing the eight character roles and offers a parody on every gaslight romance since "Jane Eyre," while combining a sympathetic werewolf, a vampire and an Egyptian princess in the same play.

Lady Enid, the new bride of noted Egyptologist Lord Edgar, is having a hard time adjusting to life in Mandacrest Mansion. The portrait of his previous wife, Irma Vep, is watching her every move, as are shifty servants and a mysterious stranger prowling the moors surrounding her house.

The performance runs every Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. All performances are at the Industrial Strength Theatre, 269 Sunset Business Park Drive. Tickets may be reserved by calling 703-481-5930 and going to mailbox 2. Tickets are $15, $12 for seniors/students.
