Del Ray

<bt>Play ball!

This is it — today is officially Opening Day for the Washington Nationals just across the river. Hip Hip Hooray! What's more? Toni Andrews reports in that little league baseball is also back in Del Ray. Yes — on Saturday, April 9, our very own Alexandria Little League celebrated Opening Day at Simpson Field. The Hon. Del Ray neighbor, Mayor Bill Euille threw out the opening pitch! What a fun way to start the spring baseball season! The best part about the day was that Harris-Teeter gave the Alexandria Little League $15,000. You read right: Fifteen thousand dollars. This is the largest contribution ever made to a little league ball club in the United States. Go Alexandria Little League Teams! Here's to a winning season.

In other news, it is with great pride that I get to take you all back 25 years to when Los Amigos officially opened its doors. It was the same short time ago that McEnearney Associates, Inc. opened its doors in Del Ray above the Scott Shop in the 2300 block of Mount Vernon Avenue. Congratulations to both for still being such integral pillars of our community.

Spring also reminds me of two women who share a birthday. Ladies, Happy Belated Birthday! You know who you are, but friends, join me in celebrating with my great friend Patty Moran and my wonderful assistant, Lauren Smith. They share April 10 and celebrated with the best of 'em. Congratulations!

What's next — another fine sign of Spring — The Del Ray Farmers' Market returns! This Saturday, April 16. The Irish Breakfast Band will provide their fabulous entertainment for us. See you at the corner of Mount Vernon Avenue and E. Oxford. Be sure to give Pat Miller a hug, for without her, the Market would never be what it is today. Happy Spring.

Mark your calendars — First Thursday celebrations will begin before we know it. May 5 is the first one of the year and we hope to see you on The Avenue. The trolley will be runnin'.
