Earth Day at NVCC

Northern Virginia Community College hosts an Earth Day/Arbor Day event on April 23.

Those attending Fairfax County's annual Earth Day/Arbor Day festivities on Saturday, April 23 could pet a llama, meet Smokey the Bear, see a soda can "biscuit" and build a ladybug house.

The event, which took place at Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale Campus, was designed to celebrate both the 34th annual Earth Day, and Arbor Day with a variety of environmentally-related activities and contests.

The Fairfax County Tree Commission presented its "Friends of Trees Awards" to the Landmark Mews Civic Association, and individuals Barbara Mildreth, Darelyn Handley, Claudia Thompson-Deahl and John Fee. In addition, the Fairfax County Recycling Awards were presented to Fort Belvoir, Peterson Management, Mitretek and Raytheon.

Throughout the day, patrons could recycle old computers and electronics through a program of the Fairfax County Division of Solid Waste and Collection.

Environmental entertainer Billy B, drummer Barnett Williams, and Glee Mania all performed, and visitors could stop by both a petting zoo and reptile and amphibian display.
