Members of the military and their families were given free admission to last Saturday’s matinee performance of Mount Vernon High School's "South Pacific." Of the 240 people in attendance, nearly half were military affiliated.
The students and families of those serving in the armed forces were recognized at intermission. By the time members of the "South Pacific" cast who had family in the military were recognized, most of the stage was filled — underscoring how many families at MVHS are connected to the military.
Jane Brewster, band booster parent, acknowledged that a handful of students’ parents are currently on assignment.
IB Theatre Director David Schmidt spoke at the ceremony that included Capt. Scott W. Rooks, Headquarters & Headquarters Commander, Fort Belvoir, and state Sen. Linda T. “Toddy” Puller (D-36).
Kathleen Pablo, MVHS sub-principal, explained that many of the students are realizing the difficulties that come with having a family member in the military.
Della Nickol Sandor, show director, said that she selected the show specifically to honor the troops and their families who are serving and have served the country.
