Registration is underway for the Classroom of Discovery's Adult-Tot classes which begin in September. The Classroom of Discovery is a not-for-profit independent preschool. The school offers two classes Monday and Wednesday mornings designed especially for 18- to 36-month-old children. The classes feature music, movement and creativity and meet at the Classroom of Discovery's facility at St. Matthew's Church in Sterling Park. The school also has a few openings for its morning preschool program for children ages 2-1/2 through 5. The Loudoun County Cooperative Extension Office will offer the Good Gardeners Short Course consisting of six, four-hour sessions — four in the evenings and two Saturday mornings, remaining dates are Aug. 23 and 25, 6-10 p.m., and Aug. 27, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Cost for the entire six sessions is $250 or attend individual sessions for $50 per session. Topics include botany, soils and fertilizers, composting, insects and disease, turf, woody and herbaceous plants, fruits and vegetables, pruning ornamentals, protecting water quality, basic landscape design, and designing an integrated pest management plan for the home landscape. Sessions will be taught by Extension personnel and Master Gardener volunteers. Registration fees will cover materials, refreshments and will also be used in support of other Master Gardener community educational activities.

The ESL and Immigrant Ministries provides English classes in 17 locations in Northern Virginia, including places in or near Loudoun County. Both day and evening classes are offered. Sterling Annex Community Center, 1115 W. Church Road, is offering a carry all basket workshop, Saturday, Aug. 28, from 9:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. For ages 16 and older. The Loudoun Cooperative Extension is offering a the ServSafe Food Sanitation course as a two-day class, Sept. 13 and 20, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Loudoun Extension Office, 30B Catoctin Circle, S.E., Leesburg. Cost is $104 and includes text, examination and certificate. Includes instruction on the microworld, contamination and food-borne illness, purchasing and receiving safe foods, food storage, food protection in preparation and service, employee sanitation training, organizing a cleaning program, pest control, accident prevention and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points. The Loudoun Cooperative Extension is offering a seminar on Starting a Family Child Care Business to provided caregivers with the tools to develop a home-based child-care service. Includes an overview of the requirements for state licensing, information on how to obtain a business license and local zoning permit for compliance with ordinances, a discussion on the Child and Adult Care Food program.
