The Reston Community Center (RCC) offers courses in English as a Second Language, Citizenship Preparation, and computer literacy for Spanish speaking patrons in the upcoming Winter/Spring 2006-program season. RCC's English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offers beginner-to-advanced level classes in English conversation, writing and
pronunciation. Each class meets twice a week for eight consecutive weeks and will run from Jan. 23 to March 20.
An assessment exam is required for all students who have not previously taken an ESL course through RCC. The ESL Assessment exam will be given on the following dates: Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. at the RCC Hunters Woods; Monday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the RCC Hunters Woods. No fee is charged for this exam, but registration is required and students must arrive on time for the test.

RCC's Citizenship Preparation class is offered to adults who are interested in becoming U.S. citizens. The class covers American history and society and prepares students for the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) citizenship test. Participants must be able to read, write and speak English. The Citizenship Preparation class meets Thursdays, Jan. 12-March 9, from 7-9 p.m., at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Reston. This class is for people age 16 and older. RCC's Spanish-language Curso de Computacion Basica (computer basics class) requires no previous experience with computers. Beginners will explore the many uses of a personal computer. They will familiarize themselves with how to use the Internet, how to send electronic mail, how to do word processing, how to buy a good computer and how to select computer accessories and software. The course is conducted in Spanish. The course fee is $55 for people who live and work in Reston and $90 for all others. The six-session course meets Mondays, March 20-April 24, from 7-9 p.m., in the RCC Computer Classroom at the Hunters Woods Facility. Free ESL classes are being offered at Dranesville United Methodist Church. More than 1,000 adult students have attended these classes since first being offered in 1993. Various levels of instruction are available for beginning to advanced students. Registration and classes continue Thursdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., until the semester ends Dec. 15. New students are welcome at any time. Free child care is also provided during class time for children 2 years and older. Jazzercise instructor Diane Eblin, from the Dulles Jazzercise Center, is offering Jazzercise Lite, a low-impact version of Jazzercise. This 60-minute class pairs moderate aerobics with exercises that are designed to improve strength, balance, and flexibility using easy-to-follow movements. Each class will include a warm-up, dance aerobic segment, muscle-toning and flexibility exercises and a final cool-down.
