Funn Offers Lessons

At Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology, insight on human dignity.

Last Friday, Alexandria resident Carlton A. Funn Sr. filled the tables and steps of the library at Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology with a small portion of his Black History Cultural Exhibit. Graduating from Parker Gray High School in 1950, Funn went to college to become a teacher. Upon completing school he returned to his elementary school alma mater and took a position as a history teacher. Funn discovered that the students were still using the same history book that he had used in 7th grade, 10 years earlier. Funn asked permission to supplement the material in the text with cultural and historical artifacts.

The purpose and vision of the exhibits are to promote awareness, human dignity and cultural understanding.
