Two Sought for Murder

Arlington police still search for the murderers of Woodbridge resident Jose Claudio Hernandez Araniva.

Araniva, 24, was shot in the Nauck neighborhood at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday Jan. 10 while he sat inside his car near the 1700 block of S. Edgewood St., according to police reports.

Shortly after nearby residents heard a gunshot, Araniva crashed his silver Corvette onto the front lawn of a home at the 1400 block of South Walter Reed Drive.

ACCORDING TO POLICE reports, two men dressed in black approached Araniva's car. One man fired a shotgun at Araniva, hitting him in the shoulder and neck.

Bleeding, Araniva sped away only to lose control of the vehicle three blocks down the street where he crashed into the front yard of a residence on South Walter Reed Drive.

The owner of the property called police, and an ambulance rushed Araniva to a hospital.

Araniva died from the gunshot wounds two hours later in a hospital.

THE TWO SUSPECTS fled the scene on foot, according to police reports. Police attempted to track the men using an Arlington K-9 unit but were unsuccessful.

The suspects are described as two black males, 5-foot-8 to 5-10. Police spokesman Matt Martin said investigators have yet to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether or not it is linked to gang or drug activity.

“We haven’t ruled that out,” he said. “We don’t have anything to say that is the case, but right now we’re looking at all possibilities.”

As of the Connection’s press time, Martin said police still had yet to identify to the two men. He added that Araniva likely crashed his car due to blood loss.
