* Musical Performance. Messiah United Methodist Church presents Mosaic Harmony on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m., at the church. Mosaic Harmony is a 90-member choir from a mosaic of races, professional backgrounds and cultures from all over the Washington Metropolitan area. Proceeds to benefit the Tsunami Relief.

* Shrove Tuesday. Join Messiah's Music Ministries and celebrate Shrove Tuesday in a traditional way on Tuesday, Feb. 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults; $3 for children ages 6 to 12; free for children younger than 12 years old; and $18 for a family. Event includes pancake decorating, and children can make Mardi gras masks and parade floats. The parade takes place at 6:45 p.m. Call for tickets or more information.

* Services. Messiah hosts a prayer service Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Those in need of God's help to deal with life's stresses and difficulties are welcome to experience the power of prayer. Messiah's Young Adults group meets on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. The Successfully Single program meets every Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and provides a forum for information pertinent to the single community.

The Knights of Columbus sponsors "Music for the Heart and Soul," on Friday, Feb. 4, at the Church of the Nativity, 6400 Nativity Lane, Burke. Event begins at 6:30 p.m., with a mini health fair, followed by guest speaker Donald J. Brideau Jr., MD, MMM, at 7:30 p.m. Brideau discusses the American Heart Association's recommendations to prevent heart disease and stroke. Then he will sing spiritual and contemporary music. Donations greatly appreciated, and funds raised will benefit the victims of the tsunami disaster. Burke Presbyterian Church offers a Coffeehouse Worship Service on Saturdays at 5:30 p.m., for those people who may be unavailable Sunday mornings or are seeking a break from a more traditional style of worship. The service offers the same lesson and sermon as the Sunday service, but in a less formal environment. A nursery is provided for young children. Burke Presbyterian Church is located at 5690 Oak Leather Drive in Burke.

The Shalem Institute is offering free monthly prayer opportunities in Fairfax. The time together will be devoted to relaxation, the presentation of different prayer practices, silence, journal keeping and small group sharing. No experience is required, and participants may attend regularly or drop in. Donations are accepted. Meetings take place the third Monday of the month, 7:30-9 p.m., at the Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax. Ann Kulp, Kathy Spaar and Tad Wicker lead the meetings. Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, located at 8336 Carrleigh Parkway in Springfield, supports a Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) program on the first Wednesday of each month. Meetings are 9:30-11 a.m., at the church. All mothers and children are welcome. The program provides mothers an opportunity to get to know other mothers through discussions and craft activities.
