The League of Women Voters. Group meets during the second week of most months at two locations in Reston for review and discussion of a wide range of public issues at all governmental levels. The evening group meets on the second Wednesday, at the Reston Museum at Lake Anne Plaza, beginning at 7:30 p.m.; and the day group meets at various locations in Reston, call 476-6426 or 471-6364, on the second Thursday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Meetings are free, guests are welcome and no registration is required. Boy Scouts. Reston Boy Scout Troop 1970 is one of several troops in the area. Monthly weekend activities include camping and focuses on a specific activity such as rafting, canoeing, fishing, back packing, hiking, biking, caving and bouldering. A high level of parent participation in the troop is a strong factor in its success. Meetings are weekly on Mondays, from 7:30-8:45 p.m., which prospective scouts and their parents are invited to attend after contacting the scoutmaster at russ.housley@verizon.net. Senior Trips. Reston Association's Senior Advisory Committee schedules a variety of trips throughout the year to places of interest such as The Kennedy Center and D.C. museums. Call 703-435-6577 or e-mail Ashleigh@reston.org.

Birth Mother's Support Group meets weekly in Northern Virginia. It is for any woman who has ever placed a child in adoption and would like to meet with others who have done the same. There is a modest fee based upon income.

Orphan Foundation of America is a Reston-based organization that provides scholarships and offers mentors to parentless teens leaving foster care. Passionate individuals are needed to work on tasks including reviewing student and mentor applications, contacting applicants by mail, phone or e-mail, making files, etc. Volunteers are also needed to help with development by researching foundations and organizations, preparing solicitation packets and other tasks. Bookends, the Reston Community Center's senior book group, meets every fourth Thursday, from 12:30-2 p.m., at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods to discuss a variety of books. Drinks and cookies are provided at no charge. Participants should bring a bag lunch. Books are on reserve at the Information Desk of the Reston Regional Library. The Reston Garden Club. Founded in 1970, the club welcomes Reston-area gardeners to join. The club meets monthly from September-June. The organization offers speakers, demonstrations, workshops, area trips and community beautification projects. The group also has an annual fund-raising activity in order to be able to donate money for nature camp scholarships and wildflower plantings in Reston. La Leche League of Herndon/Reston meets twice per month to offer support to breastfeeding mothers. La Leche League offers a lending library with books on breastfeeding, childbirth, parenting and nutrition, leaders accredited by La Leche League International and 24-hour telephone help. Reston/Herndon Branch of AAUW. The American Association of University Women meets the third Thursday of the month at Lake Anne Community Center at 7 p.m. Programs include speakers that deal with women's issues. Interest groups include book discussions (fourth Thursday of each month); gourmet group (four times a year); and tutor mentoring at Forest Edge Elementary School (Tuesdays at 3:15 p.m.). Mothers & More. A support group for mothers who have altered their career paths to care for their children at home.
