New Townhouses Near K-Mart

A small townhouse development will add to a mixed-income neighborhood near Stevenson Street in the Fairfax area.

The nine townhouses would be built on about one acre of land along Route 29. Access to the development would be through Morrisons Way, which contains some houses built by Habitat for Humanity. The development of new houses in the area will allow for a neighborhood with a mixture of income levels, said Karen Cleveland, director of Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia.

The property owners, Sam and Song Chung, plan to include a play area and picnic tables and to allow the nearby residents access to those facilities.

Current residents were concerned about the new development, which would extend the existing dead-end street. Children sometimes play at the end of the street and would need a new place to go, said Joycelyn Renwick, one of the residents. “The concern of our homeowners association is the safety of our children,” she said.

The residents asked the Chungs for some safety measures such as a speed bump and a “Children Playing” sign. They asked for these items just before the July 21 meeting of the Fairfax County Planning Commission where the development was discussed.

The commission voted to defer decision on the proposal until the residents and developer are able to work out the details of the request.

The plan will come back to the Planning Commission for a decision and then go on to the Board of Supervisors for approval.
