Chamber Raises Funds Through Golf

Golfers enjoy day in spite of heat.

The temperature was hot, but the beers were cold. With over a hundred registered golfers, it was another successful year for the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce Potomac Classic Golf Tournament.

Held at Fort Belvoir Golf Club, it featured a 2 p.m. Shotgun Start, lunch, dinner and prizes. Finishing first was the foursome with Dan Wernitznig, Roger Claire, Mike Larkin and Chuck Verschoone.

“We’ve played the last four tournaments here. It was as hot as usual, but every year we have a great time,” they said.

The Clarke & Sampson team — Chris Lindsay, Tim Thompson, Mitchell Hailey and Bill Howard — garnered the 1st Place Gross prize, while Chuck Snell, Phil Luccarelli, Matt Mathis and Ed McCoy from Griffin Plumbing & Heating claimed 1st Place Net.

Mary Beth Cutting won not only the prize for Longest Drive, but also the prize for 1st Place Wacky Ball, along with Gerry Gordon, Sandy Liddy Bourne and Su Young Lee.

George O’Quinn, Dave Baker, George Ksenics and Pete Pessel picked up the award for 2nd Place net, while Mike Congleton won the 1st Place Putting Contest.

Guests won a variety of raffle prizes and then had a chance to bid on some live auction items. The proceeds of the event will be used for the Chamber Scholarship Fund.
