George: Still a Leader

It seems that the first George to lead the nation is far outdistancing the present George in the hearts and minds of his countrymen and women. Washington has been named one of the top five in the "100 Greatest Americans" competition sponsored by AOL and the Discovery Channel.

The four-part series which concludes this Sunday, June 26, allows viewers to vote for whom they think has made the greatest contribution to the nation. "Mount Vernon Estate is thrilled that George Washington has been named as one of the top five," said Emily Coleman, assistant marketing director, Mount Vernon.

Employees and volunteers from the Estate were featured in the studio audience during the June 19 show. Washington's contributions to America's growth and development were advocated by Gay Hart Gaines, regent, Mount Vernon Ladies Association, on that segment.

Viewers may register their vote by either calling the toll free 866-669-3105 or by visiting www.mountvernon.org and clicking on the "Greatest American" link. Votes will be tallied until 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, one half hour before the show airs at 9 p.m. The winner will be announced at that time.
