Groundbreaking at Browne Academy

Campaign raises money for new multi-purpose building

When Browne Academy surveyed their parents in May, 2002, they found that 65 percent of those polled agreed a multi-purpose building was needed at Browne to provide their children with a well-rounded education. It was that mandate that initiated the $3 Million Campus Development Project.

Money raised in this campaign will build a Center for Athletics and Performing Arts, which will include a gymnasium, performing arts, music and art classrooms, dining center, food service facility and an after-school facility.

To celebrate, Browne held a groundbreaking ceremony this week. Browne Academy students wearing t-shirts and hard hats gathered together for a series of speeches and presentations by faculty, parents and students. Leo Horey, trustee and Capital Campaign chairman, announced that the school has already raised $1,470,000 against a $1,500,000 campaign total. Included in that number is $100,000 raised by a cocktail party and auction that was held this weekend.

Horey said that three things were most important about this project: it is definitely a team effort; parents at Browne have a big heart and whenever they focus, they succeed; and this will be a true measure that the people involved will leave the school better off than when they came.

Matt Joseph, class of ’01, returned to talk about his positive experience at Browne Academy and his desire to see this project succeed.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring and is expected to be completed by the winter of 2006.
