Japanese Teachers Visit Middle School

Visitors interested in how classrooms make use of newspapers.

So many cameras were clicking that it was hard to know who was press and who was a guest. The group of Japanese teachers who visited Carl Sandburg Middle School this week with their interpreters, was anxious to record everything that they saw.

First visiting the library, they wanted to know how many books they had, how many librarians, who was the biggest user of the library, how large classes were at Sandburg and much more.

Librarians Cheryl Phillips and Susan Wilkins were on hand to greet the guests, as was Principal Donna Pasteur, Assistant Principal Wendy Eaton, Dir. of Student Services Ronald James and Courtney Bitar, English Department chair.

The visit was arranged by Margaret Kapou, manager of the educational services program at The Washington Post. The goal was to learn how teachers utilize current newspapers as teaching tools in the classrooms. After observing the library, the visitors divided into groups and visited a couple of Civics classrooms.
