Oak Hill Man Charged: DUI

<bt>Fairfax County police have charged an Oak Hill man with driving while intoxicated (DUI) following a traffic accident, Monday night in Reston. He is Ahmad Mirza, 37, of 13292 Middleton Farm Lane.

Around 9:30 p.m., an officer was stopped at a red light in the left-hand turn lane of northbound Reston Parkway and New Dominion Parkway. Then, say police, Mirza reportedly pulled up behind a car that was two vehicles behind the officer, struck that car and caused a chain reaction until the officer was struck from behind.

Four people were injured, but only one was taken to the hospital. Police estimate approximately $28,000 in damages was sustained by the vehicles. They gave Mirza several field sobriety tests and subsequently arrested him. He was held at the Adult Detention Center on $2,500 bond.

<sh>Tennis Tournament to Honor McCarty

<sh>Tennis Dan (McNiel) is hosting the first annual Nicole McCarty Memorial Fund Tournament on May 13-15, in honor of the Little Rocky Run resident and Centreville High student who committed suicide in March. The family has started a memorial fund that will give out college scholarships to graduating seniors in the area. The fund will support the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention and Awareness Program. <sh>Boy, 13, Struck by Driver

<bt>A 13-year old Chantilly boy was struck by a car Tuesday, May 10 around 5:30 p.m., when he tried to cross Route 50 near Metrotech Drive in Chantilly. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. According to Fairfax County police, the driver of the 2000 Chevy Suburban that struck him was allegedly Mark William Brugh, 43, of 4290 Marly Garden Lane in Fair Lakes. Police charged him with driving while intoxicated (DWI). He was initially held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. No charges stemming from the crash are pending against the driver.

<sh>Police Looking for ATM Thief

<bt>Fairfax County police are looking for whoever stole an ATM from inside a gas-station convenience store in the Clifton area. The incident occurred Feb. 14, around 3 a.m., at the Shell gas station convenience store at 7600 Clifton Road, but police did not make this crime public until now.

After removing the ATM, the suspect fled in the direction of Clifton and Wolf Run Shoals roads. Police say the vehicle involved was possibly a black or green minivan. <bt>The Democratic Women of Clifton will hold a general meeting on Sunday, May 15, from 2-4 p.m. at the Clifton Town Meeting Hall. Guest speaker, Laura Feldman, from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, will present the program, “Social Security: Secure or Scary?” to DWC members and their guests.
