Congratulations Seniors
Following a 10th Anniversary celebration, Buzz Aldrin Elementary School alumni in the graduating class of 2005 are invited to participate in the first Aldrin Senior Reunion. The reunion will be held Friday, May 27, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Aldrin cafeteria. Enjoy pizza, drinks and cake while reuniting with old friends and great teachers. 700 New Jobs Headed to Reston
Gov. Mark Warner (D) announced Monday that BAE Systems will open a $25 million information technology work center in Reston, creating 700 new jobs over three years.
"Seven hundred new high-tech jobs is just more proof that Northern Virginia's economy is the hottest in the nation right now," Warner said.
BAE Systems, which already operates 30 facilities in Virginia, is one of the top suppliers to U.S. intelligence and defense agencies in electronics, systems and information technology and service areas.
"The company's presence has grown dramatically here in the last few years and is a great fit for our highly skilled technical workforce," said Fairfax County Board Chairman Gerry Connolly (D).
Yvonne Kabia Wins MLK Jr. Cultural Foundation Scholarship
Last Saturday at the Fairview Park Marriott Hotel in Falls Church, the Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Foundation honored Yvonne Kabia. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, one of the 11 scholarships given out by the Foundation. Kabia, who attends South Lakes High School, will attend the University of Virginia and dreams of becoming a doctor. At some point, she would like to return to her home country, Sierre Leone, to help educate the people.
Raul Fernandez Wins Entrepreneur of the Year
In early May, the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Greater Washington honored Raul Fernandez as the Entrepreneur of the Year. Fernandez, Chairman and CEO of ObjectVideo in Reston, was not only recognized for his business achievements, but also his dedication to youth entrepreneurship. Speaking about Fernandez, Julie Kantor, director of NFTE, said, “He’s what we call an honorable entrepreneur: doing good and doing well.”
Samuel Murphy Wins Scholarship
Best Buy Children’s Foundation awarded Samuel Murphy a scholarship for volunteering his time to the community, excelling in academics, participating in extra-curricular activities, and entering an accredited U.S. technical school. Murphy, a student at South Lakes, plans to attend Virginia Tech. This year, Best Buy Children’s Foundation through its partnership with Scholarship America, awarded more than $2 million to graduating high school seniors across the country.
$180K Raised at Plaza America 5K
More than 900 runners and walkers participated in the Fourth Annual Plaza America Family 5K Run/Walk, which raised $180,000 for the Children’s National Medical Center. A new course record was set by Reuben Chebii, 22, of Kenya and West Chester, Pa., with a time of 14 minutes and 39 seconds. Hundreds of other friends and family came out to Plaza America to support the participants. In four years, the event has raised more than $600,000.
Fitness Fest Coming to Reston May 28
In a few weeks, Reston Town Center will be the site of a Fitness Fest, announced Body by Geoff. The event will be held May 28 from 12-4 p.m. and will include personal training and fitness demonstrations, nutrition information, mini sessions of mat Pilates, total body conditioning, yoga, athletic performance, boxing and aerobic salsa and Latin dance. There is a $5 fee for all sessions, and restorative chair massages will be offered for $1 per minute. The proceeds of Fitness Fest will benefit Neediest Kids Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to disadvantaged youth in the Washington, D.C., area in collaboration with metropolitan Washington school systems.
